When "DIY with AI Help" Turns Into a Bigger Problem
A Real Electrical Horror Story
At NJR Solutions, we love that people are curious and want to fix things themselves. But every so often, a job comes in that reminds us why some things are best left to a qualified electrician, even when you’ve got the best instructions in the world.
The Call
Not long ago, we got a call from a homeowner who works as an IT specialist. Sharp guy, tech-savvy, comfortable with tools. He wanted to replace an old light switch in his house and, like a lot of people these days, he turned to ChatGPT for help.
To be fair, the AI did its job. It gave him a clear, step-by-step explanation of how to change a light switch. He followed it carefully, bought the new switch, and connected the wiring exactly as instructed.
Then the Lights Went Out, Literally
Before he touched anything, every light in the house worked perfectly. After installing the new switch and flipping the power back on, half the house went dark. It wasn’t just the one switch he’d replaced; entire rooms lost power to their lights completely.
He tried to troubleshoot it himself, but with no way to properly test the circuit, he couldn’t pin down the problem. That’s when he called us.
What We Found
When we arrived, we didn’t just look at the switch. We went hunting for the actual fault. Using a multimeter to test and measure the circuit, we traced the problem back to the house’s wiring itself: it was old and had become brittle over time. The moment the wiring was disturbed during the switch replacement, it couldn’t handle being reconnected the same way.
The fix wasn’t a quick swap. We ended up replacing sections of the old wiring and rewiring the lighting circuits for the bathrooms, bedroom, and washing room to get everything safely back up and running.
The Real Lesson Here
This isn’t a knock on ChatGPT or AI tools. They’re genuinely useful, and the instructions this client received were accurate for a standard, healthy circuit. The problem is that AI can’t see your walls, can’t test your wiring, and doesn’t know the condition of the electrical system it’s giving advice about.
Fault-finding is a skill on its own. It takes:
- Experience recognising warning signs (like aging or brittle wiring)
- Proper tools: a multimeter isn’t optional, it’s essential
- Knowledge of how to safely test and measure a live circuit
- The judgement to know when a “simple” job is hiding a bigger issue
“No amount of step-by-step text can replace someone who can physically diagnose what’s happening behind your walls.”
Our Advice
If you’re planning any electrical work, even something that looks as simple as swapping a light switch, get a qualified electrician to at least take a look first, especially in older homes. What seems like a five-minute job can turn into hours of fault-finding and rewiring if the underlying electrical system isn’t in top shape.
At NJR Solutions, we’ve seen it all, and we’re always ready to help, whether it’s a simple repair or tracking down a fault that’s got everyone else stumped.
