Lithium fires, often caused by malfunctioning batteries, require specialized extinguishers to ensure safety. If you’ve received a lithium fire extinguisher for your home or business, understanding your responsibilities is crucial for protecting your space and complying with South African fire safety regulations. This blog will guide you through safety checks, mounting instructions, and ongoing maintenance for lithium fire extinguishers.

Why a Lithium Fire Extinguisher?

Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in electronics, electric vehicles, and solar energy systems. When these batteries overheat, are damaged, or short-circuit, they can ignite and produce high-intensity fires. Regular fire extinguishers may not be effective against these types of fires, making lithium fire extinguishers essential.

South African Fire Safety Regulations

According to the South African National Standards (SANS) 1475 and Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) 85 of 1993, businesses and homeowners have responsibilities when receiving and using fire extinguishers. To-Do List for Novice Owners of Lithium Fire Extinguishers:

Mounting the Fire Extinguisher Placement: Mount the extinguisher in a high-traffic area, easily accessible in an emergency. For homes, this could be near rooms with heavy electronics use (e.g., offices or living rooms). For businesses, it should be in areas where lithium batteries are handled or stored. Height: Fire extinguishers must be mounted with the handle about 1 to 1.2 meter from the ground, ensuring it’s reachable by most people. Signage: Install clear, visible signage indicating the location of the extinguisher. In workplaces, this is required by SANS 1475.
Conduct Regular Safety Checks Monthly Visual Inspection: Check the pressure gauge to ensure the extinguisher is within the operational range. Inspect for any visible damage, corrosion, or tampering. Annual Maintenance: As per SANS 1475 regulations, fire extinguishers must be serviced at least once a year by a certified technician. Ensure the service provider is registered with the South African Qualification and Certification Committee (SAQCC). Recharging: After any use or discharge, the extinguisher should be immediately recharged by a qualified service provider.
Train Employees or Family Members Ensure everyone knows how to operate the fire extinguisher, especially in businesses. Training should cover the PASS technique (Pull the pin, Aim at the base, Squeeze the handle, Sweep from side to side). To navigate the tricky waters of entrepreneurship, the 140 delegates attending the SME Growth Summit 2024, supported by Caxton Local Media and hosted by Community Business Owners (CBO) at Emperors Palace on July 17 were privy to trade secrets shared by industry leaders.

With digitisation, automation, streamlining, scaling and artificial intelligence being buzzwords throughout the SM sector, Andrew Wainwright, one of the founders of CBO, said it remains imperative for business owners to regularly connect, engage and network.

CBO is an initiative that has created a fast-growing platform for local business owners to achieve just that.

Andrew Bourne, the regional manager Zoho Africa Corporation, broke down digitisation, saying that effective integrated systems have the potential of championing employees, thus freeing up their time to focus on customer relations.

Hi, this is Neels from NJR Solutions.

The festive vibes are in the air and 2022 is drawing to a close, but we cannot end the year off without sharing some of our favourite highlights. From working with our fantastic clients, exploring new projects that involved solar installations and me venturing back into the classroom as a student, NJR Solutions has gone from strength to strength.

Our client base grew in the veterinary industry as veterinary practices trusted us to ensure that their medical equipment was always in proper working order. In our blog post Daily Struggles of Veterinary Clients I shared a few of the regular problems that they have faced, the possible causes to the problems and how we were able to provide solutions. A project that I am immensely proud of is one that we completed (images above) in Johannesburg for one of our veterinary clients where we installed and connected two theatres to the medical air cylinder. To keep the medical air cylinder safe, we fabricated a steel cage.

We expanded our client range to Shelly Beach Veterinary Practice and have clients in KwaZulu-Natal. Thank you to Lyttelton Veterinary Practice in Pretoria, Allan’s Nek Veterinary Practice, Honeydew Veterinary Practice, Hazeldean Family Veterinary Practice and to all our clients past and present for using NJR Solutions.

If you could give 2022 a name, it would definitely be the year of solar energy. We have all had our fair share of challenges this year with regards to load shedding and many of our clients opted for solar. 2022 presented a great opportunity for NJR Solutions to expand in solar installations and this helped me grow as a business owner too. The images above show our first solar installation that I worked on under the guidance of Miles, a solar expert and fellow business owner. Here we installed a 5kw inverter and 9 PV panels. With the help of trusted solar installers, I had this solar system installed in my home and it has been worth it. Installing a solar system in your home is a great investment and I am speaking from personal experience. It is important to use an approved solar installer and to ask for proof of certification. This is why I did a course to obtain my PV Green Certification and passed two online exams. My passion for learning about solar installations went up a level when I completed the solar training course with Green Solar Academy. I went from student to trainer and did my first training session where I trained and presented to 20 students on the topic of operations and maintenance in solar.

Training students is not the only way that we gave back to the community. This year we were able to support my local church with various projects such as branding the walls, repairing the outside lights which had not been working for years, and assisting with various modifications and repairs. In the pictures above, one of the projects that we did for the church was installing a doorway.

2022 was an incredible year. I want to thank God for all the blessings, wisdom, and technical skills that he has given me to be the best business owner that I can be and to run a successful business. I would like to thank my wife and family for your support and encouragement throughout the year. To my fellow partners in BNI and SBN, thank you for your support, advice, and business. Which is the Correct Solution?

In one of our previous blog posts, we shared some advice on choosing between an inverter or UPS, but have you considered solar? This may be something that you are thinking about, considering that we have reached stage 6 loadshedding, the highest stage we have ever been on. Before deciding if solar, an Inverter or UPS, is the correct option for your home and business, let’s discuss the different terminologies to get a better understanding of these alternative and backup energy sources.

What is solar energy and how does it work?

Solar energy is radiation from the sun which is capable of producing heat that causes chemical reactions for generating electricity. Solar technologies convert sunlight into electrical energy either through photovoltic PV panels (solar panels) or through mirrors that concentrate solar radiation. This energy can be used to generate electricity or be stored in batteries or thermal storage. An example of thermal storage is a solar geyser to heat up your water. The sun shines on the solar or PV panels which creates a chemical reaction that creates electricity called DC (Direct Current). The current flows to the Inverter which can be used to charge batteries in DC or converted into AC (Alternating Current).

Did you know that UPS stands for Uninterruptible Power Supply? It only gives you enough time to save your information on a pc and to shut down. An Inverter is one of the most important pieces of equipment in a solar energy system as it can be used to charge batteries in DC or converted to AC for home usage of about 230 Volts.

How do I know which option to choose?

Consider these steps and questions to help you make a decision:

Which appliances do you need during load shedding and how do you want to use them?
How many hours do you need these appliances for during load shedding?
What is the total number of kilowatts that you are using? Calculate the total load by looking at the kw’s of each appliance and add it all up.
Multiply the total kw’s with the total hours. The total kw’s will determine which option you choose between an Inverter, UPS or even for a Generator.

Always Remember!

When looking for a solar installer keep an eye out for non-approved solar installers. Use an approved solar installer and ask for proof or certification. This way you will know that you are getting value for your money and the work is being done by a professional.

Reduce usage during peak times and especially just after load shedding.
Change the electrical geyser to gas or solar.
Replace your electrical stove to gas.
